Historic Union Square Location

Chancellor Hotel On Union Square sits directly on the Powell Street Cable Car Line in San Francisco's Theater District. The hotel overlooks Union Square, surrounded by Macy's, Tiffany's, Niketown, theaters, and art galleries. Fisherman's Wharf, the Ferry Building, and Chinatown are within 1.5 km.

Compact Historic Rooms

The 137-room hotel features rooms with 43-inch LCD TVs, mini refrigerators, ceiling fans, and windows that open. Rooms offer either Union Square and cable car views or quieter rear-facing positions. Choose from 12 specialty pillows. Note: rooms lack air conditioning and bathrooms are compact due to the 1914 building's historic nature.

Dining and Meeting Spaces

The Breakfast Room serves hotel guests and visitors daily. The Clipper Ship Bar offers Happy Hour cocktails and wine. The 400-square-foot Clipper Ship meeting room includes a built-in whiteboard, complimentary Wi-Fi, and air conditioning for groups up to 24 people.

Transportation and Accessibility

BART trains from SFO and OAK airports stop at Powell Street Station, a 4-block walk from the hotel. Offsite parking costs $35/night at 524 Powell Street (vehicle must have physical key). Front doors have ADA buttons, but historic limitations affect wheelchair access in rooms and bathrooms.

Family Ownership Legacy

Operated by the original owner's grandchildren since 1914, the hotel maintains its historic character. Amenities include free Wi-Fi throughout, a lobby internet workstation, and access to a full-service fitness center 5 minutes away. The property has been inspected by a certified access specialist.

“This family-owned hotel, a fixture since 1914, sits squarely on Union Square, putting you steps from the cable car and the Theater District. The rooms are well-appointed, and I appreciate the little extras, like free cookies and a pillow menu. For travelers wanting a central, walkable base, this historic property delivers solid value.”

The Chancellor Hotel enjoys a fantastic location, with convenient access to public transportation like the tram right outside and just a short walk to Powell station, making it easy to explore nearby attractions. Guests frequently appreciate the complimentary amenities such as cookies, filtered lemon water, and coffee offered in the lobby, along with practical room features like a mini-fridge. While some guests have found the rooms a bit old and noted issues with street noise due to window sealing, many find the hotel a cozy and comfortable place to stay, especially given its historic charm.

i found the location prime. powell street cable car starting point was just down the road. cable car stops were in front of the hotel. chinatown and the ferry building were within walkable distance. the beds had super comfy pillows, and i had a choice of pillows.
The room's soundproofing was not very good. I could hear noises from the hallway at times.

The location proved suitable for my business trip needs. (It was close to everything I required.)
The excessive heating in my room was a significant problem. Despite repeated requests, staff failed to fix it, suggesting I open the windows instead. I also found a cockroach in the room. It indicated poor pest control.

The location provided easy access to public transportation. The cable car was very close. I also appreciated the complimentary coffee offered in the lobby. I found fresh cookies and water readily available.
My room was rather small. Suitcase storage proved difficult. The room faced the back, and external noises were noticeable. The lack of effective air conditioning made the room too warm for comfort.
